For those of you that follow motocross on the Internet you’re no doubt well aware of Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing’s Jason Lawrence. There’s not much that can be said about the 2008 WSX Lites champion that hasn’t already been told in editorial commentary and/or posted in chat rooms from here to Europe. Wherever he goes Lawrence draw attention, most of the time good, sometimes not-so-good. But either way he enjoys one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in the word of motocross racing.
Maybe one of the best analogy’s of Lawrence was the likening him to the character “Kelly Leak” in the film from your dad’s era (circa ’76) called “The Bad News Bears.” Leak was a foul-mouthed, cigarette-smoking, dirt bike-riding rowdy who just so happened to play a mean game of baseball. Lawrence’s persona is somewhat of a modern day parallel (sans the smoking and baseball) of Leak. Growing up as a teenager in full view of the public eye where everything’s magnified and scrutinized to the nines, Lawrence’s competitive spirit was often mistaken for a short temper, his sophomoric antics - including much-publicized rental car antics and the occasional dust up – undermined the fact that this kid can really race a dirt bike.
A multi-time Loretta Lynn’s Amateur MX National champion, Lawrence turned pro during an era of top shelf amateurs the moved onto the pro ranks, including: Ryan Villopoto, Davi Millsaps, Josh Grant and Mike Alessi. In fact, Lawrence’s battles at Loretta’s with the multi-time AMA Outdoor MX National champion Villopoto in 2005 were the stuff of legend at the famed event held every August in Tennessee.
Peel away a few of the ‘core’ outer layers of Jason Lawrence and many people would be surprised to find a quite intelligent, quick-witted young man who’s fun to be around outside the professional dirt bike racing circles. With enough drive and determination to become a champion in the rough and tumble world of dirt bike racing, once Lawrence burns through this phase of tic-tac penalties and suspensions brought on by his ‘wrong place at the wrong time’ behavior, the guy’s got a lot of years racing in front of him and no doubt more wins along the way.
